Ron Barceló Imperial Onyx utilizes fresh sugarcane juice, not molasses, for its production, consistent with other rums from the brand. This particular rum ages for 10 years in heavily charred ex-bourbon barrels. Prior to bottling at 40% ABV, it undergoes filtration through onyx stones, which gives it its name. This release occurred in February 2018.

I had wanted to try it for some time, and the moment I did, I felt underwhelmed. It is rather sweet, though the added char balances the flavors. It's mellow enough for drinking on ice, but I wouldn't consider it intricate enough for sipping neat. Perhaps it was created to rival Brugal’s Leyenda, which is also on the sweeter side of the market.
If you enjoy Diplomatico, this is a solid alternative. The flavor profile is similar, but with more noticeable tobacco and leather notes. The finish is a bit dry and less sweet than Diplomatico. The price makes it an excellent buy.
A fantastic rum for whisky enthusiasts. Not only the common caramel/vanilla notes, but also spices, wood, tobacco, earthy notes from pure sugarcane juice, and smokiness from heavily charred barrels. Superior to the standard Imperial.
Excellent rum. A mild, non-alcoholic nose, a dense body with undertones of smoke and subtle spices. Not a lengthy, but enjoyable aftertaste.
A fantastic product and a personal favorite for sipping. It has a superb balance of sweetness and spice, with a subtle woody character.
This is a smooth drink, it sips easily.
