Copper & Kings Butchertown Brandy

An intense, Cask Strength Small Batch Brandy from Copper & Kings Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, made with grapes including French Colombard, Muscat de Alexandrie & Chenin Blanc. It was distilled in exclusive copper pots, aged in Kentucky Bourbon barrels & new American oak casks, and bottled at 62% ABV. Its aromatic profile features notes of Kentucky Bourbon with hints of blackberry & cherry. The bold flavor includes notes of Whiskey, Brandy, peaches & dark cherry, leading to a dry & velvety finish with hints of flowers, toasted oak & tannins. August 2020

This blended brandy is aged in used barrels from three Kentucky bourbon distilleries, with an oak barrel added for complexity. These bourbon-influenced layers help balance the surprising heat this brandy brings to the palate. It's a decent sip on ice, but I believe this brandy truly excels in a modified bourbon cocktail that aims for more fruit and color.

Initially, without dilution, there was significant burn, but it was very fruity (plums, perhaps?) with a hint of caramel. Adding a little water reduces the burn while still allowing the heat to be felt. Unfortunately, water also noticeably diminishes the fruit flavors. I wish there was better balance, but it's very good otherwise. It drinks like a full proof bourbon.

This doesn't taste like the single barrel I purchased from the gift shop. I'm so glad about that. This is a much better expression and doesn't taste like someone's error.

Wow, the alcohol content is so high that if you don't dilute it with water, you'll probably scorch your taste buds. However, a little water makes it mellow out and it's quite nice.

Notes of... ethanol. Which I suppose accurately reflects the 'bourbon' experience. However, there's a grape aftertaste.
