There isn't a lot of information available about this XO cognac. According to one online vendor: “Marnier is more recognized for their orange-flavored liqueur, but they also produce a Cognac. This is a mix of up to 30 different distilled spirits from the premier growing area, Grande Champagne.” I enjoy both Grand Marnier and cognac, so I decided to try it when I saw it on sale. From the aroma to the finish, there are abundant notes of oak and barrel spices. They start intensely and gradually fade but never vanish. The flavors are enhanced by hints of cocoa, dried apricots, and nuttiness. The palate is rich. The finish is long, dry, and spicy. Upon further consideration, this is somewhat unrefined and harsh. Reduced score by 3/4 of a point.

The nose is oak-forward with good complexity, featuring caramel, dried fig, and baking spices, plus undertones of chocolate. The palate is underwhelming and somewhat thin, with bright dried fruit and a brief, spicy finish that leaves a lingering chocolatey oak sensation. It's suitable for cocktails if obtained cheaply, but at its price, superior options exist. Fortunately, mine was complimentary.
