Appleton Special Gold Rum

This rum is better than average for its category. The funk, which is usually subtle in this brand, is more pronounced than I anticipated. It's a very young spirit, so it has some bite and won't astound you, but it's excellent in mixed drinks. The nose clearly shows the funk, along with banana aromas. The palate seems diluted and a bit hot at first, but it eventually reveals notes of dried fruit and a hint of toasted oak. The finish is brief and sweet, with only a slight warmth. This is not intended as a sipping spirit, so if you plan to use it exclusively in cocktails, you'll be pleased with your purchase. While there are superior sipping rums available, I must admit for the price it's a worthwhile addition for cocktail use alone. Unlike many in its brand when a cocktail requires a gold Jamaican rum, you can confidently use this one.

A very pleasant spiced rum, aromatic and smooth. Primarily for cocktails or mixed drinks, though enjoyable on the rocks. The prior price point was reasonable (8 EUR), but the current cost is simply excessive. I'd rather reserve 14 EUR for other selections.

This rum is quite harsh, making it difficult to discern flavors beyond the heat. The aroma offers some unusual floral notes.

VIEN 2360 0423 - Smells like baked banana and sweat, with light oak. Has a sharp middle and finish. Best for mixing.

Bad choice.
