Afrohead 7 Year Rum

The aroma is dominated by dark corn syrup, butterscotch, a scent of slightly scorched caramel, and a hint of Isopropyl. The initial taste is cloyingly sweet, followed by an unidentifiable floral note. The flavors harmonize, and the finish is pleasant, with the sweetness receding to be replaced by a mild bitterness. There's no significant spice or bite. The drink is very smooth but not highly complex. I wish I could identify the dominant floral flavor after the dark brown sugar. This is intended for mixing, but I sampled it neat and with a few ice cubes. I have abstained from sweetened beverages for nearly 20 years. As a result, I tolerate unsweetened and less sweet drinks better than most. I am sure that those who prefer very sweet drinks might find the finish's bitterness a bit much. I don't consume much rum, largely due to past overindulgence in college. I'm using this as a way to revisit an old favorite. The positive aspect is the lack of traditional rum characteristics. I didn't encounter any triggers that required me to push through. It was enjoyable, and I might consider purchasing another bottle for the summer months. I also have an unopened bottle of the XO 15 year. The drawback is that neither bottle is available in NC. I acquired this one in SC. It is also sold in limited quantities in VA. Fortunately, I don't have a 'rum issue' like I do with bourbon.

This is an excellent rum. The flavor is balanced and it's smooth. Sweetness is present but not excessive. It has warmth without being overpowering. I thoroughly enjoyed it neat. If you have the opportunity, get some.

Vanilla, caramel, oak, and a touch of marshmallow. Very smooth on the palate.

Pleasantly sweet. Mildly woody. Complements a chocolate praline very well.

Very good, I like this one better than the 15 year old for use in cocktails.

As good as the 15-year-old XO.
