About this bottle

Established in 1997 by the Anguilla Rum Company, Pyrat XO Reserve Rum is now owned by Patrón Spirits. This rum is a mixture of spirits from across the Caribbean, with a significant portion originating from Guyana in a Demerara style. The aging process involves both American (formerly bourbon) and French Limousin oak casks, with maturation periods ranging from a minimum of two years to a maximum of fifteen. The distinctive bottle design evokes the style of decanters used by mariners and buccaneers of the past. A medallion encircling the neck is believed to represent Hoti, the patron saint of bartenders, despite the bottle's somewhat awkward form.

I'm not sure why I acquired this. The container is visually appealing but I haven't encountered many favorable assessments. I likely intended to use this in drinks. Regardless, this is a very one-dimensional rum. The aroma has oak and orange peel. The initial taste is even more intensely orange and quite sweet. The orange notes are overpowering. The finish continues the onslaught with burnt orange peel and some warmth. Perhaps it's just me, but the orange flavoring is excessive. I'm uncertain of their objective here, but it feels like they should have labeled this an orange rum or something similar. I believe with the correct components it could potentially create a respectable cocktail, but neat, it is simply not good.

For some, this rum might be excessively sweet and a bit heavy on the chocolate-orange notes. For me, I have been enjoying it from a warm glass occasionally this winter and it has been quite pleasant. It deviates from your typical rum, which could be positive or negative depending on your expectations. Mixing with coke eliminates the need for added curaçao or other ingredients due to its inherent citrus sweetness. Perhaps it is intended as a winter beverage.

A rich Rum from Guyana aged up to fifteen years in American oak & French Limousin barrels. It starts with notes of citrus, orange peel, vanilla icing sugar, cola, cinnamon, brown sugar, honey & fruit; a body of orange marmalade, tangerine, lemon & hints of waxy vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon & pepper; while closing with notes of molasses, cola, orange peels marmalade & spice. Nose: brown sugar, oranges, molasses, various sweet citrus, and ethanol. Palate: Somewhat unusual; it starts with ethanol and a bitter funk I can't quite place, then moves to sweet orange, more molasses, and brown sugar. Finish: Molasses, citrus, peppery ethanol with an almost artificial sweetener taste that lingers longer than desired. It could work in tiki cocktails due to the citrus, but this is not a rum for sipping.

This is the rum; I appreciate its straightforwardness. The vanilla and caramel notes are very distinct, not overly sweet, with hints of spice. This rum sits perfectly on the palate, neat is very easy to drink, one of those products where the aroma allows immediate identification. The medallion is a bonus; a specific brand's necklace can be found on many bartenders.

On the nose, tangerines, sweet Naval orange, and candied marmalade combine with brown sugar, Demerrara sugar and vanilla. On the palate, the sugars are immediate, and the citrus notes are also present. An unexpected blueberry note also stands out. A very sweet rum. Overall: Nose 3.5/5 Palate: 3.5/5 Score 3.5/5 Repurchase: Yes Type: Friday Night Pour
