Nose: Wood, sweet syrup, timber, almonds and a strange whiff of oil. Palate: Gentle, fluid, silky start. Hints of brown sugar, caramel, and floral vanilla. Really good feel and texture. Finish: Not long. Cocoa and wood with a touch of citrus oil at the conclusion. A nice enough dram that's easy to drink, but a bit weak and forgettable. Honestly, I like the less expensive "1919" better, even if it's a tad too sweet. This spirit had an odd smell I struggled to identify. Pungent and earthy/woody, but not funky. Finally, I thought bitter almonds, but it also reminded me of light machine oil. This was off-putting. This spirit doesn't offer good value either, given the high cost. "Average": 76/100 (2.5 stars)

About this bottle
Angostura Cask Collection No. 1 Rum is a limited edition release honoring Don Carlos Siegert, son of the brand's founder, Dr. Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert. It is suggested that Don Carlos conceived of a blend like this, though it was never realized. This expression is a mixture of 8- and 10-year-old rums aged for 12 months in first-fill ex-bourbon casks.

This French rum's production method yields a distinct flavor unlike that of English rums. Could it be the higher cane presence and reduced molasses?
A score of 92? That's astonishing. It contains numerous additives.
Quite pleasing
A decent dram.
