Occasionally, one desires a departure from the usual Saturday night bourbon or whiskey. This mezcal, a sample from a friend, fills that role. My typical consumption ratio is 40% whiskey, 40% red wine, 10% mezcal, 5% tequila, and 5% white wine, so compared to red wine and whiskey, I haven't had much mezcal. The ones I have tried were very good (Del Maguey Chichicapa is likely my top choice). This one offers an aroma of agave, perhaps some grassy notes. The flavor profile is more herbal. There's a lot of heat in the finish; it's all heat at the end. This would have been a solid four stars if not for that overwhelming heat. Nevertheless, it's a pleasant sipper and a good introduction to mezcal.

About this bottle
Xicaru Mezcal is produced in Matatlán, Oaxaca, by Mezcalier Fernando Santibañez, following his grandfather's formula and traditional methods. This mezcal is crafted from 100% espadín agave, which is cooked in a conical stone oven using mesquite and ocote wood. The agave is then crushed with a tahona, fermented in an open-air pine vat, and double distilled in a copper pot still. It is adjusted to 40.5% ABV before bottling. Xicaru, meaning "beautiful" in the Zapotec language, is pronounced zee-KAH-roo.

As smooth as a particular artist's singing, with a smoky deliciousness that is perfectly balanced. For an ideal Margarita, skip any additions and just shake with a simple syrup (I added a touch of orange and habanero), rim the glass with lime and salt, pour, and enjoy.
It appears crystal clear. The scent is of mild, spicy agave. The taste is comparable, with only a hint of smoke and some fermented plant matter. Xicaru Silver has a moderate body and a predominantly dry finish.
This is among my preferred mezcal brands available. It's complex enough to enjoy on its own, and it also serves as an excellent base for cocktails! Grapefruit and/or lime with ice creates a simple and refreshing drink 🍹
Recently sampled this neat at a Hollywood bar shortly after trying another mezcal. This one was good, but I personally found the other mezcal slightly better for sipping straight.
Tried neat with a friend. I bought it to use in mezcalritas but had to sample it neat first. It's... alright, decent. There are better sipping options, though.
