A robust and woody Mezcal from the Alipús distillery (NOM-O14X) in San Andrés, Mexico. It begins with floral notes of agave, wood, and caramelized fruits, herbs, and spices; a complex middle adds flavors of apple, pear, red peppers, pine, light smoke, mint, a hint of beef, and toasted bread, leading to a lengthy finish with notes of freshly cut cedar, white oak, and a trace of sawdust. About this bottle
Alipús presents a line of traditionally crafted village mezcals developed by the group behind the Los Danzantes (also known as Los Nahuales) mezcal brand. Each bottling showcases a distinct village and distiller. The San Andrés expression is fermented with wild yeasts in cypress vats before undergoing double distillation in a copper pot still. Don Valente Angel Garcia Juárez distills this espadín mezcal in the village of San Andrés in Xitlapehua, Oaxaca.

This was my initial purchase of mezcal and it still offers good value. It has abundant big, smoky flavors. I recall really appreciating its smokiness. While I might not buy another bottle, I would gladly drink it straight, chilled, or in a cocktail if it were available:). It deserves a 3.5-star rating.
I’m not particularly fond of it. Very sharp, with a burn at the back of the throat. Burnt rubber is the dominant note, with some smoke.
Tasted in Mexico City. Superior to the purple label.
The aroma is smoky celery with a smoky cinnamon finish.
