Watershed Four Peel Gin

Bottle #016645 Given my strong preference for citrus notes in gin, this bottling sparked considerable anticipation. The other listed botanicals are quite basic, leading me to hope the citrus would truly stand out. Furthermore, it's always interesting to discover if distilleries in Ohio can produce quality spirits. Evidently, the presence of all four distilled citrus fruits is unmistakable on the nose. Juniper and coriander are also detectable, though they follow the citrus. There's an even fainter hint of black pepper, alongside a scent resembling industrial cleaner. So far, it's rather straightforward, and I hope the ingredients deliver on their promise. The initial taste is somewhat peppery, creating an expectation of greater spice than is ultimately delivered. The citrus soon dominates, clearly imparting the zest and pith of all four advertised citrus varieties. This evolves into citrus oil and, as the finish approaches, becomes notably sweet while maintaining its citrus focus. At 88 proof, I didn't anticipate a strong burn, yet it's less intense than expected, concluding primarily with the fruit flavors. This is an outstanding spirit with prominent fruit and citrus characteristics. However, it lacks the key elements that define a quality gin, failing to express spice, juniper, or floral notes effectively. It holds significant potential in cocktails, likely excelling in martinis, but drinking it neat makes it difficult to classify as a gin. If you're searching for a gin with pronounced citrus flavor, this is it, though it perhaps overdoes it slightly. Ohio remains on the map for now.

As the name suggests, this gin is heavy on citrus. This bottle, along with Bluecoat, taught me I'm not into citrus-forward gins. If you prefer citrus over herbs or juniper, this is a good choice for you. It's also great to support local breweries from my region.

The initial gin I enjoyed. It has a pleasant citrus essence from lemon, lime, grapefruit, and orange peels. Ideal in a gin Collins or gin Rickey. Created locally in Columbus, Ohio.

Completing a review from tastings years ago. If you want a gin, these people are the place to go. And this is their basic gin. Try it and if you like gin, you'll buy another.
