Tequila Tapatio Blanco

Score: 16/23 Nose: Invigorating. Pungent and minty with a hint of lemon zest. Some kind of baking spice is present. Not abundant, but a trace. Perhaps allspice and coriander? A touch of oiliness. This is a rather light aroma. Palate: Mildly flavored, yet a subtle mouthfeel exists with some muted candied, herbal, earthy agave. The spice (white pepper and something slightly sweeter) and mint are more pronounced. There's a quality like pure water that's also faintly fruity. Could that be the coriander? Or a whisper of apple appearing? A faint musty cardboard and also a very subtle note resembling tar. Glimmers of brine and lime. Finish: It's a light finish. The minty, peppery, vegetal agave remains dryly and faintly for a time. - Verdict - This isn't my most preferred tequila style, but it possesses balance without notable defects. It lacks the intensity of even a spirit like Partida Blanco, yet it also avoids truly challenging tastes. It's less fruity, unconventional, and engaging than Próspero Blanco, but alcohol doesn't intrude as much. I certainly favor this over the Próspero. Partida? That's a harder choice. I typically consider Partida to be quite sophisticated, but this surpasses it. This is closer to Ocho's level of sophistication. I'm considering a score of 14 to 17. I was leaning towards a 15 for a period, but now I'm thinking 16. Many thanks to a friend for this sample:)

A cult favorite, and also a tequila traditionally made without additives. Consumed neat. Clear but slightly hazy, with light coating legs in the glass. The aroma is sweet, vegetal, and mineral, with a light earthy quality. In the mouth, a lot of stony minerality, salt, and earthy vegetal/grassy flavors are present. The coating mouthfeel is soft, sweet, and pleasant. Lime, pepper, and a bit of bitter grassiness appear in the finish. I can understand its popularity, both for mixing and sipping. It offers abundant flavor without any off-notes or ethanol burn. It is well-balanced and skillfully crafted.

I like it. Not sure I love it enough to keep it on hand but would order it when out.

Enjoyed neat. The aroma is rich with agave, earthy/mineral notes, citrus, and black pepper. The taste is sweet agave with distinct sweet anise, citrus (lime), and earthy notes. The finish is long and sweet with herbal anise undertones. Overall, a superb traditional tequila, more flavorful than most blancos.

This complex agave spirit from La Altena distillery in Mexico begins with aromas of agave, fruits, herbs, and spices. Its development includes tropical notes of lemon, leading to a lengthy and intense finish with flavors of black pepper and chili powder. Sampled May 2017.

The sourness on the nose didn't deliver the flavor intensity I anticipated, but it was very pleasant and smooth. An easy-drinking spirit that also works wonderfully in margaritas.
