About this bottle

Still Austin's The Naturalist American Gin is milled and distilled on-site, utilizing a mash bill of 70% brasetto rye and 30% non-GMO white corn, both sourced from Texas growers. The gin is produced in 100-gallon batches, incorporating 12 botanicals such as organic juniper, coriander seeds, cinnamon, citrus peels, elderflower, and allspice berries. Previously known as Texas Rye Gin, it was rebranded and repackaged in March 2021.

Rating: 13/23 Nose: Floral citrus with a perfumed sweetness. Some herbal and vegetal complexity, but they are not prominent. I detect faint notes similar to a certain gin, but this one thankfully lacks any fishy notes. A slight hint of biting pine. That floral citrus scent is quite overwhelming, much like another brand. It's intriguing, but very challenging. Palate: This is quite fruity and unusual, with a lot happening. It reminds me a bit of another botanical gin, but not to an extent that it's problematic. This definitely pushes boundaries but isn't excessive. I appreciate the complexity and interesting character, but I wouldn't use this in traditional gin cocktails. It's very perfumed and floral, with prominent notes of rose, orange, and citron. There's a mild spice like coriander. Some vegetal root flavor is present but thankfully restrained. A slight bitterness from the roots moves towards pine notes. There's a lot going on, and it feels somewhat disjointed, but the flavors are mostly harmonious and acceptable. Finish: The sweet, floral flavor fades significantly, leaving a light rose petal note. I can also detect some orange and citron. The coriander and roots become more noticeable, with vegetal and earthy flavors becoming more prominent but not overly bitter or strong. It's a solid finish. - Conclusion - This is unconventional and demanding. Its balance is precarious. I've certainly had much worse. Overall, it's good, but not mind-blowing. I find both another brand's gin and another brand's gin to be clearly superior to this. I don't see this ranking higher than a 14, but it's not bad. It's just peculiar. This is significantly better than another botanical gin, but it still feels a bit off and unbalanced. I'm considering a 13 or 14. Another brand's gin is also performing much better. It's less bold in its profile but more balanced and has fewer challenging flavors. This isn't drastically different in quality from another brand. Both are peculiar but in distinct ways. They are close in quality. I initially thought I'd give this a 14 because of the sheer amount of elements present, but it feels too similar to that other brand for that rating. It's a 13 for now.

Starting with an orange/citrus oil impression, it then transitions to some drier juniper, allspice, and lighter floral notes towards the end. The finish is smooth, quick, and slightly honey-sweet. The complexity isn't outstanding, as the flavor profile is rather subtle, but it's a pleasant citrus/floral Gin!

Abundant floral, juniper, and citrus notes. I appreciate the combination of rye and corn. I'm not typically a gin drinker at all, but this could easily sway me. Highly impressed.

Jodie Soriano 4.0

A vibrant botanical flavor, best enjoyed with tonic rather than neat in a dry martini. It paired exceptionally well with elderflower tonic and absinthe.

Makenzie Reis 4.3

Quite enjoyable and revitalizing, much like their whiskey.
