Monte Alban Mezcal con Gusano

A beverage from my college days, roughly 40 years ago, so I can't provide a detailed tasting analysis. However, I recall its signature smoky, charred earth flavor, which distinguished it from tequilas of that period. And, of course, the worm added a sense of exotic authenticity. I wasn't fond of it then, perhaps due to my age and lack of experience, or the spirit itself. Nowadays, I appreciate modern mezcals, whether sipped or mixed, and believe there are superior choices available, even within the Del Maguey range. Nevertheless, I encourage you to try it yourself. You don't have to consume the worm.

Monte Alban presents a unique profile, diverging significantly from other mezcals and leaning, regrettably, toward the character of inexpensive tequila. Having sampled numerous mezcals, this particular one fell short. It was missing the characteristic smoky quality that, for me, elevates mezcal above tequila. Compared to El Silencio, another budget-friendly mezcal, the Monte Alban was considerably inferior. Perhaps with a bottle of Monte Alban, one should just craft margaritas! I'm questioning if my bottle was an anomaly, as other assessments appear more favorable.

Clear, pale gold color with consistent streaks from the alcohol content. The nose offers a faint agave aroma and a general scent of 80-proof alcohol. The palate also presents a mild agave flavor with a trace of plastic. Medium body. The finish is moderately long. RJT

This mezcal converted me to the spirit. The included spice sachet is a great touch, enhancing the already amazing taste. I can drink a good deal of it without issue. Definitely a top pick!

I'm certainly not a mezcal connoisseur, but I do enjoy this one, particularly for its price point. I detect spicy notes (habanero perhaps?) with lime and a hint of sugar. It's not particularly complex, but it's definitely very easy to drink.

I got swept up in the Urban Cowboy trend and gave this a shot, even eating the worm. It's definitely a "experienced it before" situation.
