This is my first time tasting Mezcal. A friend bought a bottle, and I've been eager to try Mezcal. As a dedicated whiskey drinker who's now exploring Tequila, many Tequila/Mezcal enthusiasts have suggested I'd appreciate Mezcal's signature smokiness. The aroma is primarily smoky umami. It's not a sharp, burnt wood smoke like some heavily peated whiskies. Instead, it's an earthy, rich, savory smoke. It reminds me of underground ovens used for slow-roasting Barbacoa. There's also a tart tomato scent, nicely balancing the salty, rich smoke. Upon the first sip, there's a definite salty and savory quality. It evokes cured ham, barbacoa, oceanic sea salt, and fire-roasted tomatoes. It's challenging to distinguish individual flavors; the complexity doesn't unfold in stages like a fine Whiskey. The umami taste persists through the finish, accompanied by a briny, salty sea water sensation. As the finish lingers, especially when breathing through the mouth, a hint of tartness remains. I'm uncertain if it's the tomato from the nose and taste, as it's a faint wisp that just touches the end of the finish. I don't have a reference point to score this Mezcal, as it's my first, but I'm happy to give it a respectable 3.0. I'm very interested in trying others now, and obviously, as my palate develops, this score might change later.

An Agave Spirit from Oaxaca, Mexico, created by DOM 260. It's made from Maguey Espadin that is at least six years old, fermented in pine wood vats, and twice distilled in copper pot stills before being bottled at 45% ABV. It begins with an aromatic profile of cooked agave, wood, earth, fruits, and spice. A balanced mid-palate introduces hints of citrus, leading to a warm and gentle finish of medium duration with traces of pepper, oak, and a touch of smoke. Day 15 of the advent calendar. Sampled neat. Oh, this has a heavenly, earthy, and smoky scent with powerful agave notes. It is incredibly smooth and smoky on the palate. This is absolutely delightful. I believe Espadín might be my favorite.
The nose is primarily earthy and woody, with just a touch of smoke and grilled pineapple. The palate mirrors this with smoke, char, wood, and grilled pineapple. It has a long, spicy finish. Grateful for the sample from a friend!
Lots of smoke and fruit. Like pineapple that's woody and smoked.
Like sipping on campfire smoke. The finish is quite good.
