Rating: 18/23 Nose: This blend exhibits fewer distinct notes than many mezcals, which seems fitting. I detect a slight vinegar tartness, alongside sweet cherry, smoke, and a touch of earthiness. Pinpointing finer details is challenging. Nevertheless, the balance is quite pleasing. Palate: Sweetness with notes of river water, yet smoky with a significant burn. A spiciness emerges, primarily white pepper, but it's somewhat aggressive. There's also a hint of dusty earth. Some fruit notes appear, more akin to orange, lemon, banana, and strawberry rather than the cherry initially perceived. The fruit is quite subdued. Peppermint is definitely present, complementing the spice. The smokiness carries a tar-like quality. I appreciate the complexity and balance, but it leans towards being harsh. Additionally, the river water and mineral notes might be more prominent than desired. A faint vinegar-mustard tartness surfaces late in the palate. Finish: Smoke, earth, and faint vinegary mustard. Hints of watery sweetness from the fruit are present but seem somewhat over-steeped, introducing more vegetal and bitter notes. Overall, a solid conclusion. - Summary - This offering is more subtle than many mezcals, yet it makes a definite statement. My primary concern is the excessive harshness. Beyond that, the balance and complexity are well-integrated. I'd place it around an 18. It's unlikely to be lower than a 17, with 16 being the absolute minimum. A 19 is possible, but 20 seems improbable.
