This mezcal is produced from 100% tobalá agave that grows semi-wild. The agave plants are harvested after 12 years and then pit-roasted using traditional methods. The hearts of the roasted agave plants are crushed with a mule-drawn tahona, followed by open fermentation of the juices. Gregorio Martinez Jarquin, a mezcalero in Matatlan, Oaxaca, produces this double-distilled mezcal. Small batch releases are due to conservation efforts for the wild agave and the scarcity and small size of the tobalá plants, which thrive at high altitudes under oak trees.

Dram tasted neat. The nose has sweet agave candy with a touch of campfire smoke. A very slight acetone note is present, but not enough to be unpleasant. The palate is exceptionally smooth agave, fruit, and floral notes with a char character. A really delicious dram, definitely worth checking out. Shared with a friend, much appreciated.
Comparing a 2013 vintage with a 2014 vintage side-by-side. They share similar fruit characteristics, but are quite different overall. The 2014 seems to have an ashy quality, perhaps? While the 2013 appears a bit cleaner and brighter.
The nose is sweet with peat and nuttiness. On the palate, spice and leather emerge alongside earthy notes, perhaps from the clay vessel it should be served in.
Aroma of clay, lemon, agave, honeycomb, and bubblegum. Palate of roasted agave, pineapple, and candied fruits.
Beautifully balanced, this offers floral notes, tropical fruit, and a subtle smokiness. 96
Not my preferred choice. It has herbal and pine notes. It's almost harsh. I'm questioning if my sample was correct????
