Malia Frey 3.3

I usually don't care for rum casks; I find them a bit aggressive. My hopes were pretty low for this special edition bourbon cask aged with a Caribbean rum finish. Nose: Light, subtle, with a tannic hint of ginger spice. Notes of coconut suntan lotion or Malibu rum were noticeable. Palate: The initial mouthfeel was rich, smooth, and velvety. A surprisingly pleasant sensation. The taste was somewhat uninspiring. Sticky rum notes of coconut, banana, and burnt pineapple were present, but subdued and rather unimpressive to my palate. Finish: Brief. At first, a straightforward sweet brown sugar taste that quickly vanished. However, a faint, lingering coconut and banana essence reappeared, evoking a summery feel that encourages another taste. I still hold my usual view of rum casks as 'meh', but this one's unique finish kept me engaged. It's not my top choice, but it's undeniably well-crafted and will appeal to those who favor this style. Price is for a 500 ml bottle. Bourbon cask: 3.5/5 Bourbon cask, cask strength single cask: 4/5 Apera cask: 3.75/5 Tawny cask, cask strength single cask: 4.25/5 Rum cask finish: 3.25/5 American & French oak reserve: 4.25/5
