Kirkland 4 Year Irish Whiskey

As I've consumed the 1.75 L bottle over the past few weeks, I've struggled to determine if I genuinely appreciate this Irish whiskey, or if I'm merely enduring it. I've concluded that I've simply been enduring it. While I admit I pour a generous measure over ice and sip it throughout the evening, there's a distinct lack of actual flavor. It's essentially inoffensive and bland, with the occasional hot sip that, in my mind, unconsciously triggers a 'lighter fluid' sensation. I would never serve this to guests I genuinely respect. I might consider purchasing it again purely for the economic value – that's a substantial amount of liquid for $25. However, I hope to find a superior option at a comparable price.

Recall purchasing this whiskey at Costco. Just look at the label; it states Kirkland. What were you thinking? You were just browsing, pushing your cart, when you spotted a large bottle of whiskey with an unbelievable price, causing you to exclaim, 'Wow, what a deal!' So, you grabbed it and placed it in your cart beside a two-gallon container of mayonnaise. You might as well open that mayonnaise and make a sandwich to accompany this whiskey, as both will likely be around for a considerable time.

The aroma presents notes of grass, grain, caramel, and a hint of lemon in this budget-friendly offering from Kirkland. The taste begins with a subtle sweetness, followed by hints of black pepper and salted caramel. Occasionally, some licorice notes emerge. The finish is brief but reasonably clean. It's an easy-drinking spirit but not much more. It can offer something to the dedicated taster but can also be downed quickly or mixed, though for not much more than the cost of adding alcohol.

Nose: a light, simple sweetness of spun sugar, honey, a subtle buttery note, faint spring orchard blossoms, and a whisper of herbs. Taste: mirrors the nose but with a more prominent herbal character, almost a slight bitterness. Some sharp, peppery notes are present. The sweetness is slightly more subdued than I would prefer. Overall, it's an acceptable Irish whiskey for the price. It functions well as a mixer but is less enjoyable neat. A decent budget whiskey to have for its volume.

Faint smell of anise, significant burn on the tongue with a caramel flavor. With one drop of water - less burn, smoother texture, aroma of oak. With two drops - oak aroma similar to one drop but a hint of anise flavor and fruitiness.

This is a very smooth whiskey. Like many spirits from that country, it's light on the palate and not particularly remarkable. It's a good choice for social gatherings and suitable for a pour.
