About this bottle

KI NO BI SEI Kyoto Navy Strength Gin was bottled at 54.5%, conforming to the traditional British Navy Strength. Employing the same production method as the standard KI NO BI Kyoto Gin, this final blend was adjusted to highlight each botanical's character at a higher proof. Kyoto Distillery utilizes a spirit base derived from rice and incorporates botanicals such as yellow yuzu, hinoki wood, bamboo, gyokuro tea, and green sanshō berries, categorized into base, citrus, tea, herbal, spice, and floral components. Each botanical group is steeped in the rice spirit, individually distilled, and then artfully combined.

Reports suggest this has a dominant citrus presence and is more robust than its standard proof counterpart. In terms of taste, it goes down smoothly even with its alcohol content. Flavor-wise, I find it to be just as understated and not particularly 'heavier,' and it tends to get a little lost when mixed with tonic. I sampled this on several occasions with various mixers, but it wasn't particularly memorable for me. The Ki No Tea expression was the standout from the lineup for my palate.

I had high hopes for this bottle. I absolutely adore the Tea version, which ranks among my top five gins. However, this was very underwhelming. It did not pair well with tonic, but was good in a martini. I was anticipating more.
