Ayana Mullen 3.0

This is the fourth entry in the Hobart lineup, reportedly named 'Australia's best whisky'. This expression matured exclusively in a French oak Tasmanian Pinot Noir cask. The color is stunning, a rich amber to burnt copper, appearing inviting and full-bodied. Nose: Sharp, yet also damp and deep. It has notes of stewed dark fruits, intense baking chocolate, hints of spice and pastry, which then transition to a more aged, leathery, and woody spice character. It becomes less distinct over time, completely masking its substantial 62.3% ABV. Palate: Intense and astringent. It's creamy with butterscotch and underripe green fruits (like mango?). Blueberry and malt appear as a welcome surprise. A lively, zesty citrus spritz cuts through the richness before turning tannic and well-spiced with significant oak influence. Finish: Moderate. Bitter chocolate, a touch of coffee, and a lingering malt note. Adding a bit of water reveals a powerful chocolate profile with a subtle sourness that elevates the entire experience. I'm torn. On one hand, it feels subdued and unexciting for such a high proof. Yet, there are intriguing elements at play, like the blueberry malt—I wish there was more of that. The tartness from green fruits and citrus lifts are good but don't quite balance the overall dark and heavy profile. I suspect this cask finish doesn't suit my taste. My issue here is that the most interesting aspects are easily forgotten beneath a layer of somberness. Note that prices are for 500 ml bottle. [No rocks, do not have the energy for thinking about six captions in one sitting this evening].
