Ha'Penny Four Cask Irish Whiskey

Pale gold in color. Droplets form on the inside of the glass like rain on a windowpane. The nose has sweet vanilla frosting and red apple skins. Sherry notes are present, resembling pennies and (apologies) blood. Black licorice. Butterscotch. Sandalwood. The taste features vanilla cake frosting and coffee creamer. A tart, puckering lemon drop with citrus spice. Some ripe red apple. Sherry tannins. An interesting herbal quality, though I can't identify the herb. Unexpected notes of dried apricot and honeydew melon emerge. The finish offers fresh tobacco with a lingering cigar burn right at the front. Black licorice, star anise. More of that metallic, tannic aftertaste, similar to a jar of pennies. Hints of bitter perfume and flowers. Sandalwood and cedar. This is a very smooth, pleasant, and approachable Irish whiskey that is surprisingly complex. It presents many sweet, puckering flavors initially, followed by a slightly smoky and woody residue at the end.

Ha'Penny Irish Whisky (Four Cask Blend) - 43% ABV, no age statement (minimum 3 years), blend of four cask types. Produced by Pearse-Lyon, comprising 68% grain and 32% single malts. Non-chill filtered. Nose: Oak with a very subtle herbal note. Taste: Moderate oak presence, light herbal notes similar to gin, and a pleasing lingering finish. Grainy character. Very smooth and a solid dram overall. Recalling this from a year ago, I can't pinpoint the exact spice and sweetness levels as they weren't noted. I'd certainly try it again; it's worth a taste. My memory is of an enjoyable and flavorful whisky. Price: $29.95 plus tax for 750 ml. Grade: B
