Frigate Reserve 15

My assessment of this spirit is uncertain. I saw a review suggesting it was good but not exceptional. Nevertheless, its scarcity and intriguing nature prompted me to purchase a bottle. Nose: Rather than emphasizing molasses or intense notes, this offers a more balanced rum character. The alcohol is present, but there's a greater complexity with vegetal and earthy aromas. I detect a hint of sulfur, though I hope it's not overpowering. A dry woodiness with a varnish-like quality merges with some licorice, leading to subtle vanilla. Occasional hints of molasses appear. This presents as balanced and interesting, although the aroma doesn't immediately captivate me as something I'll adore. Palate: Wood makes an unexpected initial appearance. It brings varnish and spices, alongside light caramel and a touch of molasses. A blend of vegetal, spiced, and herbal flavors swirls. I perceive a vegetal quality complemented by white pepper, cinnamon, and ginger. Hints of anise then emerge. The balance might be slightly off, but it's quite enjoyable overall. Finish: Light caramel, wood, faint molasses, mild spices, distinct carrot notes. Peculiar, but acceptable. - Final Thoughts - Compared directly with Panama Pacific 15 (rated 15/23), I prefer the slightly more robust and bitter taste of this one. It masks the alcohol more effectively and possesses a bit more complexity. I tasted this alongside several other spirits and was about to assign it a (low) 16 until I compared it with I.W. Harper 15 (rated 16/23). The latter suddenly seemed far more complex than I had previously thought. At that moment, I realized that the sweetness in this spirit was concealing the shortcomings found in most other spirits in this category, and I was unfairly judging them for not being overly sweet. In fact, I discovered fruit notes in the I.W. Harper that I had never noticed before. Then, tasting it next to Uncle Nearest 1856 (supposedly a 15/23, but I believe a 16-17 is more appropriate), I detected significantly more fruit from the Uncle Nearest than I had ever anticipated. It was practically cherries jubilee. Alright, after all these comparisons, I'm convinced this is either a high 15 or a low 16, but unfortunately, I'm settling on the 15.
