Aged three years. On the nose, notes of charred wood, baked vanilla, sweet timber, molasses, and a moderate amount of alcohol vapors. The mouthfeel is less substantial than anticipated, with flavors of smoke, charred wood, scorched caramel, blistered marshmallows, cocoa, and walnuts. The conclusion is of moderate length, dominated by charred wood and cooked sugars. I picked this up at duty-free returning from Panama since it's a brand a friend favors. Airport selections were limited, leading me to this. It's acceptable. While not a major rum enthusiast, I have sampled superior offerings from this brand.

About this bottle
Ron Abuelo XII Two Oaks is crafted from a blend of rums aged between 8 and over 40 years, resulting in an average age of just over 11 years. Initially, these rums mature in ex-bourbon white oak barrels. Following this, the rum undergoes a nine-month finishing period in 200-liter virgin American oak barrels that have been extra-charred. The charring process involves a low-temperature char for 60 minutes at 180°C (356°F), followed by a final char for 20-25 seconds at 225°C (437°F), creating an 8mm layer of black char inside the barrels. This rum became available in the United States in December 2020.

In my assessment, the dark horse of the evening was the Abuelo XII Two Oaks edition, where heavily toasted barrels imparted a substantial, dry character. The combination of tobacco, smoke, ash, and oak aromas, blended with the sweetness and exoticism of rum, created a truly intriguing profile.
A very good, easy-drinking Rum, oaky and smoky as advertised, pleasantly sweet, not overly complex, enjoyable neat but, even better on the rocks.
A good woody rum, interesting, but in my opinion, no more remarkable than the standard 12-year, so I would favor the classic.
Not overly sweet, with many flavors. It's complex.
Distinctive barrel, oak, light caramel
