About this bottle

Familia Camarena Silver is a 100% blue agave tequila produced by the Camarena family, who have cultivated agave in the Jalisco Highlands (Los Altos) since 1860. The agave piñas, or hearts, are hand-selected and typically weigh over 100 pounds. These piñas are slow-roasted for several days in traditional stone ovens prior to fermentation and distillation.

Rating: 10/23 Nose: Some pleasant stewed agave contributes vegetal and sweet notes, mingled with lime rinds. There's also salinity and a hint of white pepper. For a budget tequila, this is a surprisingly nice aroma. Palate: It's not bad, but sadly doesn't match the nose. I do detect stewed agave, an oily vegetal taste, and sweetness. That oily richness helps balance the thin minerality and hints of white pepper. While there's not much ethanol flavor, my tongue experiences some harshness, which is unfortunate. There are no unusual earthy flavors here. Finish: Definitely a lingering harshness. Minerality and oiliness are present. Hints of vegetal flavor with some sweetness and perhaps a very subtle white pepper. Maybe very faint hints of tropical fruits on the long finish. - Conclusion - This appears to be a decent mixer, but it's not an outstanding tequila overall. It might hold its own against Kirkland's blanco tequila, but it's not superior. It's quite disappointing that the palate doesn't live up to the nose. This is acceptable, but I believe it will score a 10 or 11 due to the harshness. I considered a 12 earlier, but no longer. I'm leaning towards a 10.

The aroma is a bit overpowering, and there's definitely a cough syrup note on the taste. It's creamy and sweet but leaves an oily sensation. It's rather plain and, in my view, not the best for sipping alone. However, it works exceptionally well as a mixer. Its sweetness blends beautifully in any citrus-based cocktail; it becomes quite subdued when mixed but is very well-balanced. A score of 2 for sipping and 3 for mixing.

A sweeter tequila with a very oily body. The flavor and finish are underwhelming with a slight roughness. It performs well in cocktails, particularly those with ample citrus to balance the sweetness. A reasonably good choice for a lower-tier, 100% blue agave tequila.

Daxton Choate 3.0

This tequila excels as a component in mixed drinks, creating a very satisfactory margarita or tequila sunrise. However, it lacked the depth and smoothness to be compelling on its own.

Donny Barth 5.0

A very smooth and tasty Tequila. Excellent for doing shots or serving on the rocks. No harshness with a subtle sweetness afterward.
