El Jolgorio Mexicano Mezcal

The nose is definitely more intense than the palate. The palate presents mint and herbs with an odd toffee sweetness, a dose of licorice, and a fair amount of smoke, a hint of grain, and some stale bread. It's intriguing, but the flavors don't harmonize well. It's passable, but clearly more unusual than good. I would drink it if necessary, but would prefer not to. It's enjoyable to sample, but it truly tastes like a digestif. The finish, at least, remains mostly true to the initial taste instead of becoming overly bitter or tart. Some alcohol also emerges here. The flavor is full, but not exceptional. I believe the Alipus San Miguel Sola is slightly superior, but only just. This is interesting and multifaceted, but that's about all.

Edition: 13, 2016, Ignacio Parada, 47% ABV The aroma is piney (pine sap), intensely spicy, mineral, with lemon zest, and some vegetal, roasted agave notes peeking through. Roasted agave is more prominent on the palate as well, along with juicy fruit gum, lemon/lime, mineral, and some tropical fruit notes. The finish is long, semi-dry, and slightly soapy. This Mexicano has a thin body but is extremely oily. Overall: Delicious!

While not my top choice from the El Jolgorio selection, I'm pleased to have experienced it. This particular one is predominantly savory, with herbal and slightly funky characteristics. There are no obvious fruit notes. 92
