There's a joke among Lutherans that coffee is the third sacrament (after baptism and communion, naturally). There are even more jokes about the quantity of coffee consumed by clergy, particularly Lutheran clergy - the major issue at our annual assembly in Madison was the coffee running out far too early in the day. There are also additional jokes about the amount of stronger beverages consumed by Lutheran clergy. These jokes all stem from some truth; I didn't end up on this site by accident, and...well, where there are four Lutheran pastors, there will be a fifth. If you catch my drift. At least once during seminary, there were two Lutheran pastors-in-training, a fifth of Jack Daniel's Black, a clandestine departure from a Catholic-nun-run retreat center, and an unauthorized campfire by a river. They still ordained me, so here we are. So, basically, Lutheran clergy have a fondness for both booze and coffee. But...do they enjoy them together? This small exploration into the realm of flavored rum suggests that I could be convinced they belong together, at least on occasion. Dictador's standard rum here is primarily brown sugar with little complexity, but it also has a distinct coffee influence. It's a lightly sweet rum with a prominent coffee bean flavor - and distinctly pre-brewing coffee beans, almost like chocolate-covered espresso beans. Those will certainly energize you - I consumed 40-50 of them in one sitting in college before my 1pm class, and by the end of my back-to-back lectures at 3:45, the room appeared to be swaying as if I were on a ship, I couldn't stay still, and I was speaking at about three times my normal pace. Anyway, I won't be reaching for this all the time, but as a late-night dessert dram, it's quite good. The cocktail options are also extensive. I also appreciate the care taken in its infusion and aging - this is not a low-quality product with some coffee-flavored syrup simply added and considered finished. It's still a quality rum infused with quality coffee beans. Again, not my everyday choice, but thoroughly enjoyable on its own merits.
