While not tasting side-by-side with the standard version, I'd say the smoke/peat is very subtle. On a quick taste, I'd struggle to distinguish this as different from the usual Stiggins. That said, I do appreciate this as a sipper and believe it's worth the cost for a pleasant indulgence. I've also enjoyed this more than I recall enjoying the typical release; it is distinct, but difficult to pinpoint exactly how, as the cask influence is muted. I suggest drinking this neat to maintain the creamy texture and concentrated flavor, which reminds me of a sophisticated pina colada or painkiller. The pineapple is delightful, with a good balance of sweet, tart, and bitter notes, complemented by a vegetal undertone that pairs well with the cane spirit. Delicious!

About this bottle
This limited edition bottling is a variation of Planteray's Pineapple Stiggins’ Fancy Rum, a pineapple-infused dark rum. Its smoky character comes from finishing in casks from Teeling Distillery, specifically used Teeling Blackpitts whiskey casks (a peated Irish single malt). Although previously available elsewhere, it is scheduled to launch in the US in March 2023 at select retailers, with a suggested retail price of $34.99.

This presents a wonderfully light aroma of pineapple and brown sugar/molasses. It surpasses the original Stiggens' Fancy Pineapple. Although I don't detect a smoky flavor, its overall taste is lighter. There's a subtle sweetness, and of course, pineapple notes. I experience an almost Vicks Vapo-Rub sensation and scent on the retro-hale, but in a pleasant way. It's peculiar, I know. However, I'm quite fond of this rum! Evaluations were based on neat consumption.
The nose has pineapple with a powerful smoky character. The initial taste is clearly pineapple and maple syrup, which quickly gives way to the smoke. This is an interesting variation on the original.
Subtly smoky while maintaining a balanced sweetness. It has a slight unique character that is enhanced by the smoky notes.
Strong rum aromas on the nose, light body, very sweet, with tropical fruit and spice, leading to a pleasant medium-long finish.
