CHEMIST AMERICAN GIN APPEARANCE: An attractive old apothecary-style bottle with appealing labeling, it looks great on the bar. NOSE: For a contemporary American Gin, the nose features significant Juniper alongside Citrus Peel (predominantly grapefruit) and Mint. There's a subtle Floral note. I also detect a bit of the Wheat from their base neutral spirit, which adds a pleasant earthy quality. PALATE: Wow... okay, this is where it deviates from the traditional. Abundant Citrus. Tangerine. Grapefruit. Lemon. Mint. The Juniper is present but very subtle. It feels lightly oily and slick on the tongue, with a lingering Minty Orange aftertaste. This would be excellent served neat or over ice on its own. CONCLUSION: This is a very good gin, especially if you favor Citrus. They haven't overloaded on the botanicals, but the ones they've chosen harmonize well. When making a Dry Martini with this, I couldn't decide between an olive or a twist, so I compromised and prepared a proper Gibson with Mezzetta Cocktail Onions. So far, this distillery has hit the mark twice, with the enjoyable Wiley Vodka and this Gin. Now I'm curious about their Navy Strength, Barrel Rested, and 151 proof versions.
