Carsebridge 40 Year Old 1976 XOP

This spirit was distilled a year before my birth. As I mature, encountering whiskies like this, created before I existed, becomes increasingly uncommon. Age, as they say, is merely a number, as is the generalization that all grain whiskey is inferior. Often, stereotypes contain a kernel of truth (pardon the pun!), and this is one that defies the common assumption, so to speak (ha! Double pun!). They've made an effort, but it truly feels like an uphill battle (and a trifecta!). The nose and palate are somewhat glue-like and reminiscent of acetone. There's vanilla and a bit more complexity, but overall, it's quite average. I've sampled several others tonight that have surpassed this offering.

Carsebridge 40-Year-Old 1976 (cask 11587) - Douglas Laing's Xtra Old Particular. This is a rich, limited edition bottling of Carsebridge single grain Scotch whisky, distilled in October 1976 and released by Douglas Laing for the Xtra Old Particular range forty years later in February 2017. It began with notes of syrup-coated orchard fruits, cocoa powder, and white pepper; maturation brought notes of buttery corn, festive spices, succulent apple, milk chocolate, and pancake batter; leading to a lengthy finish with hints of maple syrup, butter, and fruity esters. Sampled March/April 2018, re-evaluated September 2022.

Opened for a special occasion. Incredible whiskey, in the best way. As far as I know, the bottle I had was primarily (or entirely) corn single grain, aged in ex-bourbon barrels... the closest thing you can get to a 40-year-old bourbon. It tastes more like bourbon than any Scotch I've ever tried, yet it's incredibly delicate and rich; popcorn notes are present, set against a complex oak background. Unlike anything I've experienced before, and I've seen dedicated bourbon fans rave about this one. I would buy a case if I had the chance.
