In 1960, a person named Zé Santana started crafting cachaça at a small watermill in Guaraciaba, Minas Gerais. The product was distributed by tropeiros on donkeyback. The cachaça's renown grew throughout the area, increasing demand and leading to the installation of a larger, steam-powered mill. Five years after that, the Guaraciaba brand was officially registered, and trucks replaced the donkeys. Shortly after, it became a favored spirit in the capital. Today, Cachaça Guaraciaba is overseen by Zé Santana's successor, produced annually between June and October, with an output of 400,000 to 600,000 liters. Cachaça Guaraciaba Extra Premium American Oak undergoes a three-year aging process in American oak barrels. It presents as rich and potent (42% alcohol by volume, yet well-integrated) while also being smooth and refined, exhibiting balance, wood characteristics, and a pleasing sweetness. Observations: an amber hue from American oak aging. Viscous, slow-moving legs in the glass. The aroma is potent and rich, with notes of vanilla, coconut, toffee, spiced dried fruits, and a pleasant sweetness from oak and sugarcane. It has a good mouthfeel, with the alcohol integrated alongside the American oak presence, leading to a sustained finish. Information provided by Cachaçaria Nacional and Cachaças Brasileiras.
