Nose: Lively. Smells like nail polish, vinyl, apple, faint banana, and weak honey. Hints of vanilla if I really concentrate. Palate: A smooth, mildly fruity start, tasting more like sweet grains than molasses or sugar. Very little change happens; it gets drier with some artificial sweetener notes appearing. Weak black tea flavor. Finish: Lingering, with artificial sweetener turning into a metallic sourness at the end. Right after pouring, it has an aroma like solvent and industrial alcohol, similar to distillation foreshots. As the volatile compounds dissipate over time, it becomes a generic fruity scent. While not terrible straight, it's just not very pleasant and resembles a cheap supermarket blended whisky more than rum. This is clearly a spirit meant for mixing; it shouldn't be drunk on its own. Diluting it with cola and ice mutes the flavor, creating an acceptable rum-flavored drink. I disagree with the official rating of 86. I can only assume the bottles sold internationally are better than those kept for the local market. "Inferior": 65/100 (1.5 stars)

About this bottle
The rum is produced using a copper pot still named "The Old Copper", which is the only one of its kind in Australia, as the distillery indicates. Beenleigh reports that this still was modified by "an old German Guy" a significant time ago. Following distillation, the spirit matures in ex-brandy casks before a final aging period in charred American oak barrels, with a total minimum maturation of two years. It is made with domestically sourced components. The rum is available in 1L bottles at 40% ABV in the western United States and in 700ml bottles at 38% ABV in Australia.
