Nose: Earthy, charred citrus, a bit of wood smoke. Palate: Sweet initially upon entry, then develops acidity, while maintaining equilibrium. Smoked fragrant wood and underbrush, herbaceous (mint, rosemary, oregano), leathery, a whisper of lemon and capsicum, some subtle baking seed spices. Good texture, but not heavy. Finish: Moderate. The palate yields to a sharp herbaceous aftertaste that persists. This is the final one of four brief assessments based on a spontaneous sampling at a neighborhood liquor store. I lack extensive knowledge about this other than it's derived from 100% espadin and is twice distilled in copper pot stills. It is direct, certainly less complex than numerous other mezcals, but it is well-proportioned and fairly priced. Be advised that Aguas Mansas produces various kinds of mezcal, including some made with single wild agave varieties. Some of these batches are considerably more expensive (this is the least costly item in their lineup). However, aside from the brand name appearing in a different hue, and the wording specifying the plant variety, all their containers appear identical. "Good": 83/100 (3.5 stars)
