About this bottle

Wahaka Mezcal Espadín is an introductory offering made from agave cultivated sustainably at a palenque described by mezcalero Alberto “Beto” Morales as a "place of respect and harmony, where no arguments or even bad words may be uttered." This USDA and Mayacert certified organic mezcal is produced using a traditional tahona and double distillation in a copper alembic.

Jeanne Garay 3.3

Nose: A balanced blend of fruit and floral aromas. Hints of citrus, like lemonade and orange sorbet. The aroma is bright and refreshing, yet somewhat sharp and similar to vodka. Palate: A rather neutral arrival, very clean and crisp. Flavors of plantains, apples, a subtle saltiness, and sugars. The saltiness is mild, with an umami, mineral/vegetal quality, and the sugars are light and creamy, like powdered vanilla icing. As it develops, more light fruity notes emerge, with a touch of minty anise, reminiscent of fine pastis. A pleasantly brisk palate. Finish: Short in flavor, medium in texture. The palate fades quickly but pleasantly, while a gentle warmth remains with notes of peppery herbs around the sides of the tongue. No unpleasant sour, bitter, or metallic tastes. This is a very clean and enjoyable mezcal with a pleasant smoothness. While not overly complex, its simplicity is engaging. It's an easy-drinking mezcal with a slightly herbal quality, similar to a very neutral white rhum agricole or even vodka, especially in the finish. A smoky note is present in the nose but is very subtle, adding depth rather than being prominent. This doesn't possess the intense profile of some mezcals, but it's enjoyable as an occasional sipper and would work well as a high-quality mixer. It is somewhat expensive and doesn't quite compete with similarly priced Del Maguey expressions. "Above Average": 82/100 (3.25 stars)

While sitting at the Denver airport awaiting a flight home, which was delayed by two hours, I thought, what better way to pass the time than to sample something new. I generally like mezcal; at least, the few I've tried were quite good. This one isn't bad. It has a creamy smoke and vegetal herbal character. Letting it sit out enhances the creaminess with lasting smoky notes. Personally, I still favor Pechuga and Chichicapapa over this, but it's a respectable pour and a fine introduction to mezcal. Would I purchase a bottle? No. But did it keep me occupied while waiting for my flight? Yes.

Frankly, the only reason this isn't a perfect score is that I haven't sampled enough mezcals to fully appreciate its quality. It has minimal to no burn and a pleasant smokiness. I recall past shots of mezcal being harsh, but this one was not. I'm giving it a 4.5 for now until I try more.

This opinion might change, but... I've only tried three mezcals at this point: Bozal Espadin, Illegal Añejo, and this one. The Illegal is the best for sipping, and the Bozal is better straight than this one. However, in a cocktail, this one wins hands down. Like, it hits you hard.

The aroma and initial taste were very much like a smooth tequila, followed by some spice and an excellent smoky end. Quite pleasant.

Not a top-shelf liquor, but it serves well as a mixer. I prefer Del Maguey Vida to this one. It has a unique quality and a bit more sweetness.
