It brings to mind a white wine more than anything. The sherry finish's dark fruit notes are absent. It's closer to sherry used for cooking. Oak spice and some vanilla with honey are present. For me, however, it lacks depth. After a while in the glass, the depth begins to emerge. The initial alcohol fades, and the sherry character becomes apparent.

About this bottle
Released in August 2020, the second bottling in Virginia Distillery's Courage & Conviction series pays tribute to the late Dr. Jim Swan. Dr. Swan, a distinguished Scotch whisky distiller, scientist, and educator, served as one of the distillery's initial consultants and contributed to this release. The 100% malted barley, distilled on-site, matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-European wine ("cuvée"), and sherry (fino, oloroso, and PX) casks. These casks experienced the warm summers and cool winters of the region between 2016 and 2020. The final cask selection ratio was 50% bourbon casks and 25% each of cuvée and sherry casks, with a portion of this batch reserved for the subsequent release. According to the distillery, the Dr. Jim Swan Batch of Courage & Conviction yielded 1,650 cases, totaling 9,900 bottles in 750mL format.

The aroma resembles oak and red table wine. It starts with an overly sweet, wine-like flavor that transitions into a harsh, oaky finish.
Quite a pleasing spirit.
