About this bottle

This is the third whiskey in Teeling's premium line, composed of 100% malted barley with ages dating back to 1991. The spirit was married in a variety of wine casks, including port, madeira, white burgundy, and cabernet sauvignon, and is presented without chill filtration.

Upon first venturing into Irish whiskey, I acquired this bottle and was immediately struck by its uniqueness compared to anything I had previously experienced. A companion and I devoted significant time to exploring its scents, which deviated from the usual shortbread and butter notes. Instead, it presented a complex medley of red berries, cranberry ginger ale, cordial, lemon-lime soda, and the syrup from Maraschino cherries—remarkably sweet and inviting. On the palate, these vivid aromas transitioned smoothly into flavors, continuing the cornucopia of notes to the senses. This consistency from nose to palate amplified its appeal and coherence, delivering a satisfying experience with a pleasant malt funk. The mouthfeel, however, was somewhat lacking. The finish was notably long, leaving lingering impressions of sweet berries coated in milk chocolate. The numerous wine finishes on this bottle were prominent, crafting a beautiful and uniquely flavorful bouquet. Rating: 3.75/5.

The aroma is dominated by vanilla with hints of sweet fruits. On the palate, various fruits wash over the tongue. First Light has citrus and orchard fruit flavors, followed by richer notes of dried and forest fruits. The palate is quite rich with barrel spice and an alcoholic bite. Overall, very intriguing but a bit overwhelming for me. It might be one of those spirits that require several tastings to fully appreciate. This sample felt somewhat disorganized and intense. The different flavors don't seem to integrate well.

Sidney Smiley 3.5

A wonderfully balanced Single Malt from Teeling, incorporating Single Malts up to 23 years old. Its flavor complexity comes from a skillful blend of Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy, and Cabernet Sauvignon casks. Nose: Dried fruits, a little malt, and preserved peaches. Palate: Delicate vanilla, dried fruits, citrus, and finely spiced cloves. Finish: A balanced and medium-length finish.

Served in a Glencairn after a fifteen-minute rest. Appears pale amber. The aroma offers almonds, plums, and raisins. The taste presents some bread, baking spice, and oak. The finish is long with moderate warmth. A splash introduces a fruity, floral sensation. Overall, it scores 8.5/10. This expression marks an improvement for Teeling. The nose is exceptional; perhaps with more oak aging, the palate would reach a similar level.

Letting it rest for approximately 5 minutes. Appearance: Pale copper tones, with significant legs that cling to the glass; Nose: Lingering baking spices and tannins, berries, a touch of effervescence, and oak; Taste: An initial ethanol burst that fades, more baking spices, and a hint of marzipan; Finish: The taste has a somewhat oily quality and persists.

I had a small sample of a special Teeling single malt, though I unfortunately cannot recall its name. A bartender likened its taste to Jenever. It was quite herbal and brought potpourri to mind. On the palate, it was very sweet and smooth, followed by a funky herbal note. A fantastic pour.
