Single Malt Brazilian Rio Grande do Sul Aged for 8 years in ex-bourbon American oak barrels Finished in ex-wine barrels for 12 to 24 months (type not specified by the distillery) No caramel coloring No chill filtration Limited batch of 1100 numbered bottles Nose: Mild peat, barbecue embers, ash smoke and Parma ham; a slight earthiness reminiscent of decomposing organic matter; malt sweetness, raisins, prunes, toffee, caramel, winey notes, mild woodiness, mild vanilla, stewed figs or canned ramie, and a bit of alcohol warmth. A very pleasant whisky with well-balanced aromas. Palate: Right at the start, a more evident alcohol warmth than on the nose, followed by a medium peat and slightly earthy notes. At this point, the flavors of Parma ham and smoked meats are more apparent, bringing a slight saline sensation to the mouth (nothing like marine coastal notes). The fruity and winey notes appear in a second or third layer, with a slight residual sweetness, well-integrated bitterness, woodiness, and dried fruitiness. Finish: Medium to long, with a predominance of smoke and sweetness. A bitter and woody residual emerges after the first few seconds of tasting. General Impressions: An excellent whisky, very well-crafted, with a classic Scotch whisky profile. The alcohol content, although slightly more noticeable on the palate, is well-contained on the nose and allows for greater intensity of flavors. The 8-year maturation plus the finishing in ex-wine barrels have added significant quality to the distillery's traditional peated whisky, bringing more complexity and refinement to the final product. I recommend tasting it neat or, at most, with a splash of water, to fully appreciate this whisky in its noblest state.
