Tequila Mi CAMPO Reposado

Tasted neat. It has light straw coloration and robust legs in the glass. The aroma presents lime, mineral stone, salt, smoky agave, vanilla-infused oak, earthy sweetness from decaying fruit, and dry sweet grass. A truly wonderful start. In the mouth, mineral dust, tart grapes, citrus, and sweet vanilla oak are present. It's light and not well-defined. A slight ethanol bloom and white pepper are in the background. It's not nearly as refined or complex as the aroma suggested. The finish is dry mineral, turning sour, but it's brief and fades, leaving only a subtle lingering white pepper that intensifies in the mouth. It's a decent reposado, with a fantastic aroma that seems lost in a tequila with indistinct flavors. Better suited for mixing than sipping? Perhaps, but it won't stand out against other strongly flavored ingredients. The label artwork is excellent. I will try this in other preparations and revisit this initial assessment later.

Sampled neat. The aroma is sweet agave, very herbal, peppery, oaky, with notes of grape must. Uniquely sweet and spicy. The taste begins sweet, with agave, caramel, grape, oak, herbs/mint leaves, black pepper, milk chocolate, vanilla, and coffee bean. The finish is sweet from the wine barrel, with light cocoa and a black pepper kick. It would be overly sweet and dessert-like if not for the herbal and pepper notes, which add considerable interest. The mouthfeel is medium, and there's a slight ethanol warmth that mellows with aeration in the glass or as the bottle depletes. Overall, it's a distinctive tequila that showcases wine barrel aging rather than the typical bourbon barrel influence. It's highly flavorful and worth trying at this price, and good to keep a bottle on hand for variety.

The bottle's appearance compelled me to purchase it. I suspect aging in wine barrels imparts extra fruit aromas; however, this fruitiness doesn't translate to the palate. Spice is the initial flavor sensation, particularly a strong cinnamon note. This spiciness stimulates salivation without being unpleasant, followed by a trace of vanilla. The finish is rather extended, with the cinnamon lingering noticeably. It's highly enjoyable neat, and I imagine it would perform well in mixed drinks. I'll definitely be repurchasing it.

When I first began drinking tequila, I thought this was good. After learning and tasting more, this tequila is just okay. It smells like a s'more and tastes like a graham cracker. Sweet Graham cracker Oak Barrel influence Dessert-like Herbal I would not purchase a bottle again. I would look for another pour at a bar or at someone's house. The agave character is lost. The liquor is thin. Good for a dessert drink for a beginner. Not a staple for a collection.

As smooth as one could expect from a Reposado priced under $25. Nose presents white chocolate, peaches, white pepper, wild blossoms, vanilla, and agave. The palate features vanilla, whipped cream, herbal notes, and a woody caramel. It's smooth initially, followed by a pleasant peppery heat at the end. The finish is long, alternating between pleasing softness, creaminess, and pepper.

An elegant Agave Spirit from NOM 1137. It has an aromatic beginning with notes of agave, wood, herbs & spices; while a rich life added notes of caramel & vanilla, leading to a balanced end of medium length with notes of oak, pepper & chocolate. April 2016 / 2017
