Tequila 1921 Reposado

The aroma is somewhat spicy and herbaceous with a hint of bitter root and a touch of licorice. It also carries a scent of brown sugar and some mint. The taste is minty and smooth, with a strong saltwater taffy flavor that is sweet and enjoyable but quite unusual. My palate might be compromised, so this could be entirely imagined. It's fairly rich, but well within the range for a reposado. The sweetness is quite noticeable but not overpowering. The saltwater taffy provides saltiness, but primarily richness. The mint complements the saltwater taffy nicely, preventing the spearmint note from dominating and tasting like toothpaste. It's a very interesting and delicious tequila, but also quite perplexing. This is an unusually refreshing beverage that is reasonably complex. Ultimately, it's a bit on the weak side, but that saltwater taffy flavor is surprisingly captivating. The flavor is unfortunately subtle, but still enjoyable. Because it tastes like saltwater taffy. It's sweet and fruity with balanced richness and some viscosity (but not excessive). I would be interested to sample the añejo to see if it offers a fuller flavor and additional complexity. Smooth but unremarkable. Lime, mint, a little white pepper. Not bad, but quite uninspiring. There's a noticeable herbaceous and slightly vegetal undertone with a hint of agave sweetness. It's acceptable, but lacks character. Very mellow and rather uninteresting. Upon recent tasting, it seems closer to a 12 or perhaps even an 11. For now, I'll reduce it from 14 to 13. Still, perhaps that's just the effect of oxygen. Yes, I'm lowering it to a 12. It's bitter and watery with some subtlety, but not enough.

Delicious reposado from a surprisingly inexpensive bottle. Fantastic cracked pepper notes are complemented by gentle agave sweetness and very mild lime citrus. A fully developed tequila, though not exceptionally intricate... A wonderfully long finish emphasizes the distinct yet fitting mid-palate flavors, leaving me wanting more...

Aromatic and smooth on the palate, lacking significant complexity or reward.
