Sonoma County Distilling Co. 2nd Chance Wheat Whiskey

Pulled an old bottle from the shelf, intrigued by unmalted wheat, and decided to try it. The label indicates it was bottled in December 2014, suggesting it might have aged more in the bottle than in the barrel. Also close to 120 proof (59.75% ABV), so it likely differs from professional reviews. It seems to have aged well over the past 5+ years on the shelf at one of my preferred liquor stores. The aroma has sweet fruit candy, similar to a Jolly Rancher but less intensely sweet. There are also some sweet, almost tropical, floral notes. Honey and white bread are present in the background. The palate is a bit thick, almost coating. It's sweet but well-balanced with rye spice. Flavors of honey-drizzled pear and peach with a touch of sweet cream. Middle notes of sweet breads. The finish is spicier and longer than anticipated, with plenty of rye and a pleasant alcohol warmth. In some ways, it's quite charming. I have to wonder how many people overlooked this over the last 5 1/2 years. It's unusual in many respects, but I enjoy it, and I appreciate its story. There were about 8 more bottles on the shelf, so you might find it at a beloved but poorly managed liquor store near you. I'll likely revisit that shelf and consider purchasing one of the remaining bottles multiple times in the coming months...

Aroma of wheat and blooming prairies. Very young whiskey. The taste begins sweet, then quickly becomes spicy. The whiskey is a bit thin. The finish is awful; medium length with notes of paint thinner mixed with wheat and spice. This whiskey needs considerably more time in the barrel before bottling. Best avoided neat; it performs better as a mixer. It should be priced at the bottom shelf level. It's certainly not worth premium prices.

Sampled at The Polite Pig in Orlando. Very mild on the palate, sweetness is present, not quite fruity but refreshing.

Smells of honey, but the taste is less sweet, though not harsh. Notes of toast and butter.

Soft and bready. Not as good as the only other Wheat whiskey I've encountered.

Pleasantly sweet.
