I believe this is perhaps my second or third tequila. A smaller bottle, costing the equivalent of about $50 for a standard size. So---I had no plan to purchase anything, but visited my local shop just to see what was new (actually to try some wine and cheeses). I encountered that attractive clerk from Oaxaca again, who spoke with me about Oaxacan food. For a second time. She then inquired about my enjoyment of the mezcal she had suggested (the Ilegal Rsposado). Now she recommended this. Twenty minutes later, after a detailed explanation of the difference between Mexican chocolate and regular chocolate in Oaxacan cuisine, I found myself in line making a purchase. Anyway, on the positive side---this is a truly excellent sipping tequila. If you enjoy scotch, this would appeal to you. The nose has notes of green herbs, specifically thyme and bay leaves. The taste is minerally, with a subtle smokiness. Grass and green fruits, like kiwi. A hint of raw papaya. Simply amazing. The finish has smoky tobacco and cigar notes. I'm really enjoying this. She was completely right. Thank you to the clerk who works the Sunday afternoon shift.
