Rough Rider Happy Warrior Cask Strength Straight Bourbon, from Long Island Spirits, pays tribute to the 1898 First US Volunteer Cavalry. This bourbon, produced by MGP with a mash bill of 60% corn, 35% rye, and 5% malted barley, is aged for at least 4 years in 55-gallon barrels before being blended with older bourbon. It then undergoes a secondary maturation for 3 to 6 months in French oak casks (ex-merlot and chardonnay) that have been washed with brandy. These wine casks are sourced from local Long Island wineries, and the brandy is distilled by LI Spirits. The bourbon is bottled at cask strength following this final blending.

I received a bottle as a present from my child. The aroma is somewhat muted, though the high proof isn't as harsh as one might expect. The palate is mildly sweet with a whisper of the wine cask influence. The finish is spicy and satisfying. Overall, it possesses a somewhat distinctive flavor profile that I appreciate. I suspect this bottle won't sit around for long!
A top-tier small batch bourbon for me, featuring ample toffee, caramel, and vanilla. The cask strength delivers a solid initial burn. I prefer it ice cold to unlock its intense flavors.
Definitely an improvement over the regular proof RR. The wine characteristics provide a pleasant musty fruit aroma over a hot, spicy foundation.

This is a fantastic bourbon. It goes down smooth and isn't harsh at all. The aroma is wonderful, and it's a truly pleasant and enjoyable drink.
