I recently had the opportunity to visit the distillery's second location in Brunswick, GA, and sample their products post-tour; it was well worth the expense. This was another chance to support a local enterprise and experience something new. A friend from my Guard unit had visited and highly recommended it, so last weekend I took my father to the distillery, and we tried five of their offerings, thoroughly enjoying ourselves. The rum being reviewed is aged for 4 to 5 years in virgin oak charred barrels before bottling. In a Glencairn, it has a medium amber hue and is very smooth, with vanilla and oak on the nose. The body is exceptionally smooth, featuring caramel notes and oak that transition to a finish reminiscent of a buttery sugar cookie. This rum is exceptional; it should be savored slowly, much like a fine whiskey. If you choose to mix it, do so gently, as this is a delicate drink. The rum is somewhat expensive, but its quality justifies the cost, and it helps sustain a small business, making it worthwhile for now. Enjoy.

About this bottle
Erik Vonk commenced growing sugarcane at his Richland, Georgia plantation in 1999. Driven by a desire to create a handcrafted rum from his own sugarcane, Vonk founded the Richland Distilling Company. This rum is unique as it is distilled from sugar cane syrup rather than molasses or juice. It is aged for 4-5 years in new toasted and charred American oak barrels and bottled at 43% ABV.

Typical vanilla, caramel, and wood notes are present, but a new element emerged this time. For the first time, a faint anise was detected on the finish. Quite subtle, yet appreciated.
Sugarcane aroma, with smooth vanilla and caramel on the palate. A slight warmth is present on the finish due to its higher proof. Overall, it's very smooth for a rum made in America.
The aroma is vanilla cream, molasses, cherry & wood. The taste includes cherry, spices, sweet almonds, wood & a pleasant hot finish! Truly fantastic! Highly recommended.
Aroma has cane sugar and light vanilla. Initial taste of cane sugar, caramel, and mild spices. A hint of coffee in the background? Incredibly good rum.
