The aroma is lovely, with bright top notes of raw rye dough and baking spices layered over warm toffee and vanilla. The palate is led by bright rye spice, which quickly transitions to smooth, darker, almost bourbon-like flavors. The finish has a slightly peppery quality, moving into dry oak. Overall, it's a nice whisky to sip, especially with a little water, and it makes an excellent old fashioned. It could serve as a good introduction to rye for those who enjoy high-rye bourbons like Bulliet or Four Roses. I purchased it for £38 from Amazon UK (approximately $50 US), which I feel is a fair price for the quality. However, I wouldn't want to spend more. The three-year-old version (not bottled-in-bond) is also very good if you prefer a lower proof.

About this bottle
The New York Distilling Company introduced this bottled-in-bond version of its primary Ragtime Rye in April 2019. The whiskey, which meets the Empire Rye criteria as all its rye grain originates from New York state, is aged for at least four years in full-size barrels and bottled at 50% ABV. Its mash bill consists of 75% rye, 13% corn, and 12% malted barley.

(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual American Whiskey Tasting, 3rd July 2021). Nose: Dried light fruit (apricots), a hint of tartness, buttered popcorn. Very subtle on the nose. Palate: Intense mouthfeel. Light spice, buttercream, clean and mild. Finish: Short finish. Light spice, oak, vanilla, leather. A slight tartness in the aftertaste. 73% Rye 15% Corn 12% Barley Empire rye from New York State. This offers a lovely burst of flavor, but it fades quickly on the finish. Finished second out of the six pours, with 23% (3 votes) of the final tally for favorite of the evening. 92% (12 votes) of those present indicated they enjoyed the whiskey.
The color is a bright gold that leaves irregular, viscous trails on the glass. The aroma starts with a floral rye spiciness, vanilla, cherry liqueur, charred oak, and a touch of caramel. The taste is somewhat rich, filling the mouth with a smooth rye spiciness balanced by vanilla, charred oak, cherry liqueur, caramel, and a slight astringency with cinnamon. The finish is medium in length, with fading rye and vanilla, while the astringency mixes with cinnamon and charred oak.

An immediate burst of bubblegum and vibrant orange on the nose. Further investigation reveals notes of buttered popcorn, chocolate, and butterscotch. A gradual warmth develops on the tongue, with mild astringency. Chocolate and vanilla notes emerge, creating a creamy and smooth sensation.
On the nose: graham cracker, frosting, orange. On the palate: char, orange creamsicle. The finish has light spice and cream. Remarkably smooth for 50% ABV. It lacks the heat of some single barrel expressions but is enjoyable nonetheless.
