El Dorado 15 Year Rum

The 12 year old is a fantastic rum. As expected with the added age and cost, this expression surpasses it. Served straight, the aroma presents oak notes saturated with melted butter and burnt brown sugar. Hints of baking spices, graphite, and worn leather complete the bouquet. The taste is viscous and full-bodied, featuring buttery dark caramel, unadulterated vanilla, holiday spices, a well-worn leather jacket, seasoned wood, and a subtle hint of lingering smoke. The lingering aftertaste is characterized by smoky, buttery oak, diminishing brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and aged leather. It achieves a dryness that counterbalances the sweetness. This rum is intricate, delightful, and a top-tier performer. Don't hesitate, just get it. For approximately $40-50, you'll acquire a superb spirit that demonstrates rum's potential as a sophisticated drink. At worst, you'll enjoy an outstanding rum and coke. 91/100

The aroma is a blend of vanilla, coffee, and orange peel, reminiscent of a fine French latte. The first sip delivers an explosion of flavors without any harshness, transitioning from a French latte to a Cuban coffee profile, with strong brown sugar and cinnamon notes. As you continue, chocolate and citrus flavors emerge. The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of coffee and cinnamon. While still relatively new to rum, I consider this the Cognac of aged rums. It's among the best spirits I've encountered on my tasting journey so far. I might even visit Guyana someday just to tour the El Dorado distillery. This is world-class quality in a glass.

My second rum for sipping after Diplomatico RE, I immediately found this one drier, more complex, and slightly more challenging due to its pleasant warmth. My favorite aspect of this rum is the aroma—toasted nuts, roasted coffee, and dark brown sugar. Insider tip: revisit the empty glass a couple of hours after finishing for a delightful olfactory treat. The taste is equally luscious and rich, with walnuts, vanilla, caramel, and a significant presence of woody oak. At times, I find the dry oak warmth a bit intense if I'm not prepared for it. There's no doubt this is barrel-aged rum. My preferred choice for sipping—a balance of indulgence with a touch of challenge. I intend to try it in occasional cocktails as well.

Brown sugar and light molasses are the most prominent aromas -- perhaps some dark cherry as well. It possesses a richness. I approve! A mild cinnamon warmth; I'm pleased the proof isn't higher. There's sweetness, but it's not sugary. Just a couple drops of water help to mellow the burn and bring out a subtle floral aroma. Light caramel, mild orange zest, and a trace of fine tobacco are the flavors I can distinguish. At times, it tastes as though it was matured in Dalmore Cigar Malt scotch barrels! It's certainly a pleasant spirit for sipping and also works well as a component in mixed drinks. Rating is based on drinking it neat.

A standard single malt whisky enthusiast's impressions: Nose: 4.25 stars. It's exceptionally sweet, like confectioner's sugar, with notes of plums, honey-glazed BBQ meat, and white pepper. The aroma has good depth. Palate: 4.25 stars. The texture is incredibly smooth, with a peppery sensation that transitions into sweetness. Finish: 4 stars. There's a funky, woody bitterness, dark spices, ash, and a lingering honey sweetness. This spirit is well-rounded but bold, reminiscent of a premium aged scotch, though lacking its profound complexity. The structure and mouthfeel are somewhat similar to Glendronach Allardice. A great value purchase.

Maple, wood, and funk on the nose, with a bit of alcohol. The palate has maple that's perhaps a touch too sweet, combined with a spicy harshness that blends with the funk. There's some molasses bitterness, but it doesn't fully counteract the sweet maple and feels a little strange. With more sips, the complexity emerges more. The spice is quite noticeable. It's adequate. Some complex elements exist, but it doesn't quite come together. It seems excessively sweet. I'd be content to sip it, but I don't love it. It's a 14 to 15.
