Poit Dhubh Blended Malt 21 Year

Poit Dhubh is a blended malt from Prában na Linne on the Isle of Skye. I first sampled it at their booth at WhiskeyLive Dublin last year and enjoyed it enough to seek out a sample. It's not chill-filtered (though it has added color) and is said to contain several Island whiskeys. This has a wonderful sherry-forward aroma, with a hint of gentle, subdued peat. Lighting our solid-fuel range oven after school was one of my chores. I used factory-compacted peat briquettes that I split with an axe, alongside kindling. That's the subtle peat aroma in this whiskey that transported me back decades. The taste is smooth and sweet, with Zante currants being the most prominent flavor. A little water revealed a subtle sulfur note and dark cherry in the aroma, and some orange on the palate. The finish is impressively long, with lingering light peat smoke and burnt marmalade. Overall, I found it to be well-rounded and smooth – more sherry-driven than peaty, but very well-balanced. Slightly above 4 stars in my opinion – perhaps a 4.25. Let's round it up to an even 4.33333333333333.

Cherry, chocolate, and sweetness on the nose. Incredibly smooth. The more you drink, the more the vanilla emerges. The peat is subtle, mostly in the aftertaste. A small amount of water enhances the aroma but diminishes the peat. Overall, a remarkable drink with a distinctive blend of sweet and peaty characteristics.

Time in the sherry cask is noticeable. Vanilla and a touch of peat are most prominent, but many other flavors are present as well. Making space on the top shelf.

Pleasant and smooth texture. You can discern the residue of ash. All in all, a worthwhile purchase.

Subtle on the front end. The middle palate offers notes of vanilla and caramel. It concludes with a lengthy, smoky finish.

Great smooth taste! A bit of sweetness from the sherry casks. Well worth the 21-year wait!
