PILSA offers a variety of Cuban-style Panamanian rums, with the Panamonte brand being an early market entrant. The Panama Red is their slightly overproof offering. While the bottle lacks an age statement, it is understood to be a blend of rums aged up to five years in former bourbon casks. Currently, this product is not distributed in the U.S.

If you appreciate genuine rum, the kind that actually tastes like rum, steer clear of this artificial chocolate creation. A hydrometer revealed approximately 20g/litre of sugar, which conveniently explained the cloyingly sweet scent and taste. It should rightfully be classified as a spiced rum.
Indeed, it has added sugar. Many rums priced much higher also do. It accepts dilution favorably, and at around 45% ABV, it's quite tasty with a thick texture and a smooth finish. Discovering I liked it as much as bottles I already own that cost two to two-and-a-half times more led me to purchase a case.
Potent rum, but enjoyable.
