Old Pulteney Coastal Series: Pineau des Charentes

From a virtual whisky tasting on November 19, 2022, presented by Good Spirits Co. Glasgow. On the nose: Honey, creamy texture, vanilla, and orange. On the palate: Sweetness, nutty notes, toffee apple, a saline quality, stewed apple, white dessert wine, raisins, heather honey, cinnamon, and salted caramel. On the finish: A medium-long conclusion. Sweetness, toffee/caramel, currants, a light spice, and saltiness. The lingering taste has whispers of menthol. It has a creamy mouthfeel. This is a remarkably sweet and salty pour. It's packed with grape juice and honey, finishing with a tangy menthol. This is a delicious, sweet, and multi-layered whisky. A wonderfully intricate dram. It tied for last place among the six pours, receiving 0% of the votes for the night's favorite. 48% of attendees indicated they enjoyed the whisky.

An inviting, slightly briny aroma with familiar peatiness leading the way. On the palate, the Pineau des Charentes becomes noticeable, imparting a mildly fruity shadow on the tongue. This grape character remains evident throughout the long journey towards the finish. However, the whisky itself is never far from notice. In fact, it provides a broad base upon which the secondary aging character rests. This is a unique and innovative expression that leans strongly towards the dessert style of Scotches. Lovely, fruity, and memorable.

Nose: Sweet dried green fruits like sultanas. A touch of subtle saltiness. Palate: Slightly viscous. Light stone fruits with added caramel sweetness. A wave of peppery spice follows but is balanced by the sweetness. Finish: Drying with a taste reminiscent of a salt water-soaked oak stave.
