High Wheeler 21 Year Single Grain

With my house undergoing major renovations, cooking has been challenging. Some friends kindly invited me over for a meal the day after lockdown restrictions eased. They opened this, which was part of a triple 200ml set from the NZ Whiskey Company. It's a lighter style aged in refill oak, and the grain influence is noticeable. It's interesting to experience a piece of history. I'll have to try the 21-year-old from this distillery someday.

I'm fortunate to have sampled this elusive whisky. The nose has hibiscus and comforting vanilla. The palate immediately brings to mind Banana Runts, followed by more vanilla and a yellow cake flavor with buttercream. However, the grain character cuts through the sweetness, elevating these notes into a floral realm. The finish is sweet, exceptionally smooth barley that is rich without being overpowering. A big thank you to the person who shared this treasure.

The 70% single malt is prominent on the nose, with red and green apples, a touch of cinnamon, oak, sea salt, orange zest, light pineapple and coconut water, sunflower seeds, and light pepper. The palate mirrors this with heavy sweet orange cream liqueur, vanilla, and some pineapple. I've never encountered a whisky so creamy and oily; it's truly delightful.

It's harsher than I anticipated for a 21-year-old. I don't believe a bourbon barrel was the optimal choice; a port, sherry, or similar cask would have been superior.

This whiskey isn't quite my preference. It's drinkable with some floral notes, but feels diluted and very light. A letdown for a 21-year-old.

It's rather thin, yet fairly mellow. The aroma is excellent, but the flavor lacks significant depth.
