Navy Bay Rum

Nose: Overripe banana, burnt caramel, molasses, stewed apple, cola, brown sugar, sweet vanilla, pineapple, cinnamon, tobacco, cherry, boozy chocolate, with a mild to moderate alcohol burn. Taste: Overripe banana, creamy vanilla, molasses, burnt caramel, nutty nougat, tropical fruit, cinnamon, tobacco, nutmeg, ginger, cherry, apple, with a mild alcohol bite. The finish is medium length with molasses, overripe fruit, and baking spice flavors. This is undoubtedly a Jamaican rum, with the distinctive 'hogo' very apparent. However, it tastes young and somewhat unrefined. It doesn't measure up to spirits like AE 12, but it's an acceptable budget choice, better suited for mixing than for sipping neat.

The nose has notes of dark cherry and leather. The cherry, however, seems more akin to cherry wax than the actual fruit. There's also pineapple present. The initial taste misses the fruitiness. Leather remains noticeable. Hints of wood and vanilla appear. Fruitiness reappears in the finish just before the alcohol heat arrives. The lingering taste has some of that waxy, plastic-like quality.

An intense rum from Jamaica, produced using both pot and column stills, then matured in former Bourbon barrels. It starts intensely with notes of alcohol, spices, and wood. Its bold character develops notes of fruits, brown sugar, molasses, and cinnamon, leading to a long and robust conclusion. Sampled September 2019.

Smells of molasses, vanilla, brown sugar, and flowers. The palate is sweet, roasted, with burnt caramel and light fruitiness. Some heat. Clearly inexpensive.

Good dark rum, not surprising in its flavor profile, suitable for mixing.

The butterscotch scent and flavor are prominent.
