Masterson's Straight Rye Whiskey 10 Year

Ok, right from the start, disregard the "professional" reviews; many of the people here are overly pretentious. I just tried this and didn't really anticipate much, to be honest... Nevertheless, I opened the bottle, let it sit for about 3 minutes, then took a good sniff...wow! The toffee upfront was so inviting....I poured a generous serving, let it sit for 5 minutes as I do with all spirits.. took my first sip and wow, a really nice spice hit me in the mouth, along with the toffee again...the lingering taste was pleasant, changing from sweet to a leathery spice...and a nice moderate finish with a great aftertaste.. buy this. $70 is a bit steep; I think this is more of a $50 bottle, but I would definitely buy it again.

A solid, approachable rye that most people will enjoy. The nose is typical for a rye: light honey, rye spice, and eucalyptus, with no anise. The palate is very gentle and light upon entry, not a heavy or oily spirit, and not particularly sweet. It develops into a bitter citrus rind that gives way to rye spice and leather. The finish is all leather and dry. It might work well in a cocktail.

Batch 015. Quite disappointing considering the cost. Lacks sweetness, has mild spice, and the little flavor that is present is overpowered by an ethanol burn. I've heard batches vary significantly in taste, and this batch is reputed to be one of their less impressive ones, but I'm very unlikely to try it again.

Served neat in a rocks glass at Yard House DC. The aroma offers distinct apples, light baking spices, and mild oak. On the palate, it's creamy spices, bittersweet, with oak and apple peel. A lingering spicy finish. It's alright. 12/5/19.

Honestly, this was a random selection to finish a tasting flight. A very fortunate choice! The heat is balanced by the fruitiness. Abundant vanilla. Exceptionally smooth. I could use a bit more heat.

Incredibly smooth for a straight rye. I'm not typically a fan of rye, but this is outstanding. Enjoying it at The Chanler in Rhode Island after asking my girlfriend to marry me!
